Abdul Rauf Azhar or Mufti Abdul Rauf Asghar is the younger brother of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief, Masood Azhar. He is the supreme commander of the militant Pakistani group, Jaish-e-Mohammed.
He was born on 1 January 1977 in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan. His family operated a dairy and poultry farm. His father, Allah Bakhsh Shabbir was the headmaster at a government-run school and also a cleric with Deobandi leanings. He has four brothers and six sisters, one of them is Masood Azhar, who is the founder and leader of the terrorist organisation, Jaish-e-Mohammed.
On 21 April 2007, Abdul Rauf Azhar took command of the Jaish-e-Mohammed when its former leader, Masood Azhar went underground.
He was involved in an Indian Airlines Flight 814 (IC-814) hijacking.
He was also involved in many other big attacks like in Pathankot, Uri, Nagrota, and Pulwama.
Because of his militant activities history, he is one of the most wanted persons in India.
In 2009, Abdul Rauf Azhar was summoned by the establishment to Islamabad to help the government negotiate the 42 civilians’ release who had been taken hostage.
On 2 December 2010, the United States Treasury declared Abdul Rauf Azhar a terrorist.
