After schooling, he was enrolled in college but he dropped out and move to India to join his maternal uncle Mehul Chinubhai Choksi’s company ‘Gitanjali Gems Ltd.’ He worked in this company for almost 10 years.
In 1999, he left his uncle’s company and founded his own diamond jewellery company ‘Firestar Diamond International.’ One of his friends requested him to design the earing pair for her.
He then turned his designing passion into brand and launched his own brand ‘Nirav Modi’ in various locations such as Macau, Delhi, Hong Kong, Mumbai, New York, and London.
He takes keen interest in collecting paintings.
In 2010, he became the first Indian jeweller to be featured on the catalogues of Sotheby and Christie.

In 2010, his ‘Golconda Lotus Necklace’ was sold at the Christy’s Hong Kong auction for Rs. 16.29 crore.
In 2012, his ‘Riviere of Perfection’ was sold at the Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction.
In February 2018, Punjab National Bank (PNB) registered a complaint against him, his wife Ami Modi, uncle Mehul Choksi and brother Nishal Modi claiming that they defrauding the bank of approximately Rs. 14,400 crore. According to reports, they were also fraudulently involved in issuing Letters of Undertakings (LoU) or bank guarantees at the Mid Corporate Branch of bank in the Mumbai’s Brady House. The Enforcement Directorate handles this case of fraud. Nirav Modi’s passport has been cancelled by the Ministry of External Affairs for four weeks. His wife, uncle, and brother already left India before cancellation of their passports to save from the investigation.
