Controversy:
In February 2018, Punjab National Bank (PNB) registered a complaint against him, his wife Ami Modi, uncle Mehul Choksi and brother Nishal Modi claiming that they defrauding the bank of approximately Rs. 14,400 crore. According to reports, they were also fraudulently involved in issuing Letters of Undertakings (LoU) or bank guarantees at the Mid Corporate Branch of bank in the Mumbai’s Brady House. The Enforcement Directorate handles this case of fraud. Nirav Modi’s passport has been cancelled by the Ministry of External Affairs for four weeks. His wife, uncle, and brother already left India before cancellation of their passports to save from the investigation.
