Ranu Mondal aka Ranu Maria Mondal is an Indian singer who came into limelight when singer, Himesh Reshammiya gave her an opportunity to sing for his Bollywood film, Happy Hardy and Heer.
She belongs to a poor family and was born as Ranu Roy to a poor hawker, Aditya Kumar (Father) on 5 November 1960 in Kartickpara, Krishnanagar, West Bengal, India. Her parents died when she was a child. At the age of 19, she got married to Babul Mondal who died in 1981. She has a daughter, Swati. She met her daughter after 10 years in 2019.
At the age of 20, Ranu used to sing in club and was known with the name, Ranu Bobby. Due to her family restrictions, she left singing. In 1981, after the demise of her husband, she came back from Mumbai to Ranaghat and started singing at Ranaghat railway station to earn money. She was financially very poor and even didn’t have home to stay. Atindra Chakraborty, a software engineer recorded the video of her in which she sung the Lata Mangeshkar’s song, Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai and posted it on Facebook. She got huge recognition with that video and Sony TV invited her on the set of a singing reality show, Superstar Singer. During that show, Himesh Reshammiya was too impressed with her voice that he immediately offered her to sing song for his upcoming film, Happy Hardy and Heer.
Ranu then made her singing debut with the song, Teri Meri Kahani for the film, Happy Hardy and Heer. She has also sung a song, Aadat for that film.
